Scheduling Sequencing and Tips 📋

Hi Reader!

For many SpEd teachers, scheduling can be one of the most overwhelming parts of heading back to school. Can I let you in on a little secret?? It is actually one of my favorite things! (I know, I know NERD ALERT!🤓) I just love the challenge and the systemic way it can all fit together.

Scheduling Sequence

I actually created a sequence of steps that I always followed when scheduling:

  1. Non-Negotiables: arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, specials, etc.
  2. Daily Routines: unpacking and packing up backpacks, restroom, snack, etc.
  3. Sensory Breaks
  4. Instruction (yes you read that right... sensory before instruction!)
  5. Extra Time Fillers: computer, iPad, free play, puzzles

Scheduling Tips

When scheduling, I always made sure to consider the following:

  • To limit interruptions, give all staff members a copy of their schedule and post schedules for all in centrally located area of classroom.
  • Designate somewhere for staff to write down discrepancies during first couple weeks of school such as an area on the whiteboard or on a clipboard
  • Determine a way to communicate the schedule to students that they can interact with. In my classroom, I always used a location-based schedule like this one you can find on my TPT store (click image below).

I hope this helps you wrap your head around scheduling as we head into the new school year. If you have any questions as you get started, feel free to reach out! Again I am a total nerd 🤓 for this stuff!

Until next time!

Hi Reader! I always found it easy to find opportunities for the daily practice of literacy skills in my classroom. Name sequencing, sight words, vocabulary, read-alouds... we regularly did it all! 📚 But math was a different story. I found that I often compartmentalized math instruction to single bands (money, time, numeration, etc.) and it was usually during IEP or intervention time. So students were primarily working on skills at their level or related to their goals and did not get the same...

Hi Reader! For several years, I gathered all of my students on the carpet and had them help dictate while I wrote out our morning message during morning meeting. But, I finally realized that this was a waste of time for my classroom of mostly non-readers. Once I was finished with each daily message none of my kids could re-read what I had written and it really was not meaningful at all! Plus, many of them lost focus because they did not understand what I was writing or even what I was asking....

Hi Reader! Can you believe the back to school season is upon us? This was the fastest summer EVER! But I am excited for another year ahead. Some of my favorite activities this time of year include: reading No, David! by David Shannon with my students (they giggle the whole time!) 😆 creating a classroom mission statement with my students 📝 teaching essential school vocabulary with games such as scavenger hunts, vocabulary fishing, BINGO, and board games 🃏 To learn more about what Back to...
